Sailing Trip for a 60th Birthday
My 60th Birthday on the Baltic Sea: Family Time Under Sail
There are birthdays that come and go. And there are birthdays that you’ll always remember. I thought long and hard about how I wanted to spend this milestone birthday. A big party? A trip? A surprise? The decisive idea finally came from a good friend of our family: “Why not take a sailing trip lasting several days on a traditional sailing ship?” No sooner said than done—and looking back, I can say: It was one of the best decisions of my life.
From Idea to Launch: The Perfect Start with TSC
Even our very first contact with Traditional Sailing Charter (TSC) was extremely pleasant: friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, and with a palpable enthusiasm for what they do. It quickly became clear—this was a good fit. Two days before my birthday, we set off for Kiel in three cars: my wife Tina, our adult daughters—
—and their husbands, a close family friend, and me. Once we arrived at the Blücher Bridge, we were allowed to drive right up to the ship to load our luggage and provisions—a small but very relaxing luxury. There she was before us: the Catherina, a beautiful traditional sailing ship with character, history, and soul.
Arrive. Take a deep breath. Feel at home.
We were warmly welcomed by the skipper and owner, Wessel, and his partner Chantal, a helmswoman with a big heart, plenty of experience, and a smile that instantly inspires trust. After settling into our cozy, lovingly furnished two-person cabins, one thing was clear: we were going to feel right at home here. A welcome drink in the warm lounge below deck, a thorough safety briefing, and then: time. Time for conversation, for laughter, for that very special first evening on board—first on deck under the open sky, then later below deck because of the cool air. That night, the gentle lapping of the waves against the ship’s side helped me fall asleep. It doesn’t get much better than this.
A Different Kind of Birthday: Come Aboard!
You don’t want to spend your birthday “just anywhere,” but out at sea—surrounded by the wind, wide-open spaces, and a genuine sense of tradition? Then check out our sailing trips now and find the one that fits your date—whether you’re looking for something relaxed, social, or a little adventure with a real crew vibe.
A morning that opens the heart
The next morning, after a restful night and a hot shower, we met on deck for our first cup of coffee. The fjord lay calm, and neighboring ships were anchored quietly—a moment that warms the heart. Even before breakfast, I knew: This sailing trip was just the thing for my family. Together we prepared breakfast, listened to Wessel and Chantal tell exciting stories about the Catherina, and then it was time to cast off. Our sons-in-law didn’t need to be asked twice and helped hoist the sails. It was quite a strenuous task, even for athletic young men. Gliding out of the fjord toward the Baltic Sea under full sail was simply breathtaking.
Experience sailing—don’t just tag along
Eckernförde Course. Chantal introduced us to the secrets of knots, ties, and deck work. Sailing on the Catherina means: getting involved, understanding, and experiencing.
While some relaxed on deck, reading or enjoying their second cup of coffee, others ventured out onto the jib net, securely harnessed. Wind, waves, freedom. In the afternoon, we arrived in Eckernförde, and it was time for the obligatory “welcome beer” from the onboard tap. A little ritual that instantly puts you in a vacation mood.
Galley Duty & Harbor Charm
That evening, my wife and I were assigned to work as galley hands. In the well-equipped galley, we turned our supplies into a dinner for everyone—and apparently with great success, since we received praise from all sides, including the crew. Our subsequent shore leave gave us a chance to explore the charming port town of Eckernförde before we fell into our bunks, satisfied and tired.
A Birthday at Sea—It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This
The next morning began with a big surprise: a lavish birthday breakfast, congratulations, gifts—all organized by my family, our friend, and even Wessel and Chantal. That moment was priceless. As a result, we set out for Kappeln quite late. The weather now showed its rough side: wind, cold, and high waves. Shorts were swapped for oilskins, and the first signs of seasickness began to make the rounds. Some sought shelter below deck, while others stayed out on deck and experienced the full force of the Baltic Sea. Just as quickly as the weather had arrived, it cleared up again—and in the afternoon, we sailed through the Schlei estuary into beautiful Kappeln.
Happiness, Gratitude, and a Very Special Evening
I spent my birthday evening enjoying good food, delicious drinks, and deep conversations with the people I love most. In that moment, I knew: I am a truly happy man.
A Birthday with a View: 360° of Freedom

Pure relaxation & the gateway to the Danish South Sea
The next day took us toward Geltinger Bay—a quieter, more relaxed day, marked by rest and individual pursuits: reading, sleeping on deck, and small sailing tasks. In the late afternoon, we reached the Geltinger Pier, the “Gateway to the Danish South Sea.” After a welcome beer and an excellent dinner (this time prepared by other families’ cooks), we sat together for a long time. Wessel and Chantal shared stories from their life aboard a traditional sailing ship —stories that inspire respect, admiration, and a longing for distant horizons all at once.
A Bittersweet Farewell—and a Clear Sense of Certainty
By the last morning, we’d become so skilled at setting the sails and handling the lines that Chantal, with a twinkle in her eye, wanted to hire us as future sailors. Souvenir photos, last glances across the deck—and then the realization: It’s over. It wasn’t just the ship; we’d also grown fond of Wessel and Chantal. Their warmth, professionalism, and the way they made everyone on board feel at home made this trip truly unique. Saying goodbye in Kiel was hard.
Conclusion: A birthday that sets the bar high
This birthday sailing trip was more than just a journey. It was family time, adventure, a chance to slow down, and inspiration all at once. I don’t know if Wessel and Chantal will still be sailing the Catherina in ten years. But if they are, I’ll be back on board for my 70th birthday. With my wife, my children—and probably my grandchildren, too. Some experiences you never forget. This one is definitely one of them.
